In September, Stockholm’s art scene opens another chapter of its autumn season. At Galleri Melefors on Sibyllegatan 69, “In Between”, an exhibition by Nadine NASCH Schjölin, invites visitors into a world where portraiture becomes an exploration of human presence, emotion and everything that cannot always be expressed in words.
The title itself – “In Between” – leads us into a space between what we see and what we feel, between a person’s outward appearance and their inner world. A portrait always leaves something unsaid: a fragment of a story we do not know, yet instinctively try to discover in a gaze, a gesture or the expression of a face.
Among the works presented in the exhibition are “Lara”, “Doria”, “Merija” and “Lumi”. All are oil paintings on canvas, yet they differ in scale and character. From the more intimate “Lumi” to the larger compositions of “Doria” and “Merija”, each work creates its own encounter between the portrayed figure and the viewer.
Portraiture has an extraordinary ability to suspend time. We look at someone we may never have met, and yet, for a moment, we attempt to understand their emotions. The painting ceases to be merely an object. Instead, it becomes the beginning of a relationship between the artist, the person portrayed and the viewer.
In a world increasingly dominated by rapidly changing images and digital communication, this direct encounter with art acquires particular significance. A painting cannot be fully experienced through a screen. Its scale, the texture of the paint, the light and the traces left by the artist’s brush reveal themselves most powerfully when we stand directly in front of the work.
An important part of “In Between” will therefore be the opportunity to meet Nadine NASCH Schjölin herself. The artist will be present both during the preview on Thursday, 10 September, and at the vernissage on Saturday, 12 September. Visitors will have the opportunity not only to experience the paintings but also to meet the artist behind them and hear more about her creative process and the ideas surrounding the exhibition.
The presentation is accompanied by two recent sculptures by Frank Olsson – “Men at Work” and “Motion in Rust”. Created in stoneware ceramic with copper and iron patinas, the works introduce another artistic language into the gallery space – one shaped by material, movement and form.
“In Between” also marks one of the opening events of Galleri Melefors’ autumn programme in Stockholm. Following Nadine NASCH Schjölin’s September exhibition, the gallery’s programme continues with events including Affordable Art Fair Stockholm and further presentations throughout October and November.
Yet perhaps the most compelling question remains the one suggested by the exhibition’s title:
What exists in the space between an artwork and the person standing before it?
Perhaps this is precisely where art begins – not only on the canvas, but within the emotion, memory and personal interpretation of the viewer.
