Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is organising the ‘Archaeology Between Discovery and Preservation’ workshop, aimed at shedding light on Dubai’s history and rich cultural heritage, while raising awareness among community members about the importance of the emirate’s archaeological sites and the significant artefacts and discoveries they reveal. The initiative aligns with Dubai Culture’s responsibilities and sectoral priorities to strengthen public awareness of the value of archaeology and its role in preserving the emirate’s collective memory and cultural legacy for future generations.
The workshop, to be held at the Hatta Community Centre on 18th June, will feature a series of specialised sessions delivered by leading experts and researchers in archaeology and cultural heritage. Dr Mansour Boraik, Archaeology Expert at Dubai Culture, will explore the history of archaeological work in Hatta and highlight its most prominent sites, spanning from prehistoric times to the Islamic era. Meanwhile, Maitha Al Mutaiwei, Senior Archaeologist at Dubai Culture, will present an overview of the Suhaila Archaeological Site, its key landmarks, and Dubai Culture’s ongoing efforts and projects to develop, preserve and safeguard the site.
The workshop will also examine the archaeological surveys and excavation activities carried out across Hatta, which have led to the discovery of hundreds of artefacts that contribute to understanding and documenting the lives of the region’s early inhabitants and highlight their historical and cultural significance. Through these discussions, the workshop seeks to enhance awareness of the value of cultural heritage and its role in strengthening national identity.
Hatta is renowned for its rich cultural legacy, which spans thousands of years, from the Bronze Age (third millennium BCE) through to the Late Islamic periods (16th to 19th centuries CE). The region is home to a diverse range of archaeological sites, including tombs, houses, watchtowers, falaj irrigation systems, agricultural terraces, and mosques. Together, these sites stand as living testimonies to Hatta’s development over time and provide valuable insights into the social and economic life of the area’s inhabitants throughout history.
