Halina Rosa: Good day, David! Let’s dive into your fascinating journey. Could you share what inspired your passion for jewelry design and craftsmanship?
David Harper: Hello, Halina! It’s a pleasure to be here. My journey began at the age of 16 when I secured a five-year apprenticeship in London’s Hatton Garden, known as the “diamond district.” The intricate world of designing and crafting jewelry captured my heart during that time.
Halina Rosa: That’s quite an impressive start! How did your experiences at the Sir John Cass School of Art in London shape your approach to jewelry design?
David Harper: The art school provided a wonderful platform to explore creativity and refine my design skills. It instilled in me a deep appreciation for the artistry behind jewelry, influencing my approach to creating pieces that not only showcase craftsmanship but also tell a unique story.
Halina Rosa: Moving from London to Stockholm in 1986 must have been a significant transition. What drew you to Stockholm, and how has the city influenced your work?
David Harper: Love played a role in bringing me to Stockholm. The city’s charm and vibrant atmosphere captured my heart. Since then, Stockholm has become an integral part of my creative journey. The local culture and aesthetics have undoubtedly left their mark on my designs.
Halina Rosa: Establishing your atelier and shop on Drottninggatan in 1998 is a noteworthy milestone. Can you share the philosophy behind combining your workspace and retail space?
David Harper: Absolutely, Halina. The idea was to create a space where customers could witness the entire process—from design to creation and even repairs. It adds a personal touch, and I believe it fosters a deeper connection between the wearer and the jewelry.
