Banking Adventure Reimagined/ Ekrem Ozulker

I started banking in 2000. Foreign exchange and foreign trade were my first adventures in banking. After about 5 years, I decided to continue my adventure in the field of marketing. When I became a branch manager in 2008, I started to manage an organization myself. Thus, my management life began. After working for 2 years in İstoç, one of the commercial centers of Istanbul, I continued my job in Izmir, one of the most beautiful cities in Turkey, in 2010.

In 2012, I received my first international assignment in my life. I was appointed as the Head of the Bahrain branch of the bank where I worked for 5 years. Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, UAE, Oman, Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong were my areas of duty. In every country I visited, I learned different things from the people I met and we developed many successful businesses in our mutual benefits.

At the beginning of 2017, we decided to return to our beautiful country, wanting my children to continue in the education system in Turkey.

I became the head of private banking, which is the first and only Islamic banking system in Turkey. This field was actually quite new both in the banking sector we do and in the field we address. We achieved many firsts. Other Islamic banks followed us in this field.

I had spent nearly a quarter of a century in banking. I felt like it was time to leave. And one morning I realized this decision.

I now look at life outside of banking. I spend more time with my family and myself, travel more, and think more.

It’s nice to be able to be free. I spend more time on religion and philosophy. I started reading novels and stories again.

It is necessary not to allow numbers, targets, and money to kill the human spirit.

Of course, in the meantime, I work as a consultant in the fields of finance, portfolio management companies, and investment banking on my planned time, without spending all my time. During this period, we established an investment bank. In this adventure, I gained a new experience that I had never had in banking. After installing it I left. I didn’t want to repeat the same things.

As I said, I now tasted freedom. Man is a perfect being. He should not spend his entire life in one area. One should strive to leave a legacy for the future, tomorrow, and the world.

I visit fairs and see new areas. I am exploring different aspects of trading. Maybe the time to set new sails is approaching.
